Evaluation question 1

Evaluation Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research and Planning

Before we started any filming we researched the horror genre and got different ideas from different types of horror films we noticed that there was different effects used but the typical conventional for a horror was repeating so we noticed what we had to do. We used youtube and apple trailers to watch them. we also analysed them as well this helped us with the typical conventions. We watched about 20 different trailers all of them were linear ones so they just went from beginning to end.

The Amityville horror was one of the main film we used as a guideline.

I also used google images to get pictures of the films just to see them as an example for when we started our magazine cover i also used this for finding a location because the pictures showed the establishing shots for a certain type of area where many typical convention horrors are normally filmed. Google was also used to view different types of magazine covers just to have a brief understanding of what is normal and what graphics, font is needed.

For the filming part we used an sony HD V1 camera to have clear and clean footage this also helped with the editing stage as it didn't really need much work done all the shots did appear separately so it was easy to delete them too. For editing we used finale cut pro.

The footage was imported from the camera from a sony tape deck and i just had to log and capture it onto the computer. On finale cut pro it appeared on a timeline so it showed how we filmed each shot and what we needed to change in each one and to cut any extra scenes from the footage.
When trying to film a horror trailer the scenes don't have to be in linear form so the shots had to be moved up and down through the timeline. Once i cut the the extra shots and put the footage in order i then had to edit the colours and add effects.

The three ways colour filters was used to change the lights to brighten or darken the footage with different fades and hard cuts into the footage. With the three way colour filters i had to play around with each filters to see what colour footage would go with each one and if it made any difference in the shots. The colour corrector helped getting the footage into the horror genre it was different using this but once all the footage was edited and put together it came together very well.

To design my poster and magazine cover i had to use Adobe photoshop this was very new to me as i have never used photoshop before so i had to do many different trials before i could start making my magazine cover.

With photoshop i had to learn how to use a whole new different technology so it was really hard to put things together. with making the magazine i had use different icons from google so it was hard getting them from there onto my picture but eventually it came out good it was a perfect cover but i had a finish one done to help promote my trailer.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

When we completed our trailer, to get an audience feedback we used social media, like twitter and youtube. By posting the video on youtube we wanted to show our trailer and see what people actually think about the film and if they would like to watch the completed version of it,we used twitter so all our friends and family could also view it and give us back some constructive feedback.  Another reason we used both of these social networks is because we know many teenagers of our age group would be on twitter and watch this type of genre related trailer also most of our friends are on twitter and also wouldn't mind viewing our video on youtube.

Also after completing our poster and magazine cover we showed it to our friends and family so we could get some sort of feedback we also wanted to see what type of reaction they would give and if it wasn't the reaction we were looking for then we could ask them what should we change for next time.

We started of planning a psychological thriller film we filmed parts of it and wanted some sort of feedback so we decided to showed a group of audience including our friends and family hoping for some constructive feedback, which we could use after. The feedback we got was, we should change the genre of the trailer to horror because they said it was more horror then psychological if anything.

Magazine cover

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We were targeting a teenage group with our horror film by having this target audience we had to promote our film across various media we made them on accessible on different technologies e.g Mobile Phone,Television,Computers and Tablets.

Mobile phones are modern technologies that are used by many people now days and they now have access to the internet through they phone. The tablet is another modern technology that many people use and it also has different apps so i based our film to be useful on these applications for more teenagers to view it.

Our media product was filmed on a HD camera which made the film clear and easy to be viewed on these different technologies. We also made are teaser trailer to view on television even though its an old technology it still is good to promote films and attract audiences to come see the film.

The magazine cover and poster was also going to be published on twitter and on face book to get people talking about the film and get it to attract it to the bigger audience. By networking it like this it would spread all over the world.

I included a number of re-occurring motifs across all three of the products using the same character to make it more recognisable plus the same font and graphics were used on the magazine cover and poster.

Production

Our film did not go as plan and time was running out so instead we used audience feedback and decided to change our film into a horror and also change the narrative of the film and made it into a young girl who becomes possessed and burns down her house but still appears and disturbs the people who live in the house now.

Story Narrative horror

The story is about a young girl who ends up being burnt in her house ,but she appears to come back and she starts looking at old pictures of her family and her stuff and becomes obsessed with it all and ends up being a possessed girl who doesn't leave the house and disturbs anyone who moves into the house. The film itself is about the girl but the twist is that she was the one who actually burnt the house down herself and made the whole mess because she was not happy with her life and did not like having her family around her. The film is a horror it is mainly about a girl who has become possessed and gets angry and kills her family because she is not herself her actions are being forced by someone else.

Influences

What films have influenced your ideas? The genre of our film is a psychological thriller we have been influenced by different thriller films. one of the films that influenced our group was 'When a stranger calls' because the film based on a well known legend which is about a babysitter that gets a mysterious phone call and starts to get stalked little does she know's the phone calls are coming from inside the house. We used this idea because it is well known so we would get a big target audience however we have made it a modern version with it own climax twist to make it relate to the people of the present day. The best films are from remakes. Another good thriller that had an influence to our trailer is 'Perfect Stranger'. This film is about a reporter that investigates a murder case and starts following around a big business man trying to get information. The film has a twist that gets the audience thinking, this gave us the idea to have a twist and a stalker to make it more interesting. Plus we find out that the women that is investigating is actually the killer and by doing this she is trying to hide herself. For the horror effect we watched many differnt trailers to see how the killer was presented and also to see how they had used mise en scene and sound to create the fear factor. Saw was of of the film that used the genre of horror in a different conventional way. This film used in a game process which the victim can end up killing themselves. This is different from conventional horrors because we know who's the killer but he isn't actually killing them he just puts them into a situation.

Poster/magazine cover examples

This is a horror magazine cover Theses magazine cover show two different images one is showing a horror film, the picture is a close up with her faced covered in red make up to make it seem like she is covered in blood. The face expression on her face is like she has just come out the film and straight in to a picture. The other magazine is a picture of sarah jessica parker and she is known to be starring in rom/coms so her picture was taken as her looking in to the camera but it shows a side view of her and it seems as she is trying to give us the impression that she is a cute girl and it shows how she is in her films.

What the film is about

Young isolated girl forgetful memory Bad home life Murdering her love Montage clips showing fast effects on everything that happened. Fade scene with a voice over.

Production Schedule

Production Schedule Monday 29th October First filming schedule where we are going to film in Romford and Barking. We are going to start by getting all the montage clips of the trailer we are also going to get the shot of the girl. This day my group have decide to make sure we have all are mini scenes done so we can the other days to do the start, and the epic end. Thursday 1st November This day me and my group are aiming to have all our filming done so we can have enough time to do editing, plus we can add anything we think is needed.

Trailer Idea

Young Girl Possessed Stalker Epic Twist mystery The trailer will open up with the protagonist going through a scrap book of images of the same boy the images are going to be in black and white to show they are from the past and there is going to be a voice over of her talking about the pictures, this makes the audience feel as if they are listening to what she is thinking and because its all about mental problems this is a good way to set it off because straight away its about what going on in her head and how she thinks. It will also be a montage of fast clips to build the tension because it is a thriller, many of the shots will be close-ups to make it more personal to the characters. The trailer would be international because it has a big target audience so it would appear on the internet, television and posters so everyone can see it this is making sure the product is widely advertised.

Location

We based our location in Romford because it represents a young girl who doesn't fit in the crowd. we used Romford shopping mall because its a place were people go with they friends and this is going to show that she's alone and that there is something wrong with her. Our second location is going to be barking. Here we going to use a bedroom to show how the girls home life is and how the obsession began and what she is really going through. The bedroom is going to be the main use in the production because everything began here.

Equipment List/Props

For our production we are going to use different equipment to make the perfect trailer. We are going to be using a camera and a tri-pod for our filming.

Sony Dv Camera

The props we are going to use is a photo album, a knife and a bag.We are not going to use many props only a few to help with the production.

Generic Conventions And Iconography Report

Generic Conventions And Iconography Report

Trailer Analysis-Media Language

For my media language analysis I have chosen the film 'The Perfect Stranger' the film is a brilliant crime thriller which has a strong narrative structure that has a mystery towards the end where the film has a epic twist. The trailer for this film is 2 minutes and 29 seconds and it shows many different events that take place in the film and has its all different narrative structures. The trailer is exactly what me and my group would like to do for our trailer because it’s a perfect thriller that we would like to do. The transitions that are used are match on action were the scenes cut from one event to another. By doing this the film is broken down to help understand the narrative and genre of the film before watching it. There is about 59 clips in the trailer and each clip is about four seconds each and some last about six seconds the longest.

There is one logo used and that says 'Revolution Studio'. Revolution studio is an American film company that was founded in 2000 by Joe Roth. This the company that made the perfect stranger so the trailer shows this before any part of the film begins. As the trailer begins there’s a text saying 'Everyone has secrets' the trailer continues on to the middle where all the scenes are a montage showing a lot of different events. Once we know that the film is about a reporter than the text appears saying 'The only way to know the truth is to play the victim’, every secrets, leads to another. 'This spring trust no one. The texts help outline the narrative of the film. The end of the trailer shows the protagonists name 'Academy award winner Halle Berry. Bruce Willis, Glovanni Ribisi. Then the text appears saying Perfect Stranger which is the films name.

The trailer has an echo effect which causes a tension to build up the thriller genre. The trailer has a little drop in the sound that makes it seem more effective. There’s a smooth non diagetic sound that causes the trailer to be a mystery and even though the film is a circular it gets the audience thinking and makes them apart of the film. This effect is given to the audience because the film has an epic twist to it which is not that easy to establish. The trailer doesn’t contain any voice over but it does have an echo over to another clip that still causes an enigma and a suspension.

There is not many graphics and sfx that are used in pro-production in this film but there is a lot of cross fade where they have added like for example the quotes 'every secret' this helps the trailer transfer from the film and gives an outline of the narrative to help the audience understand. There is a like a cross over from one scene to another and the colour changes to black and white which gives a detail that the clip is important.

Narrative Analysis

What is the narrative structure of the whole film (why was it chosen)

The narrative structure of the film is Linear where it goes in order on how the events take place and it builds the tension through the middle and continues to the end. The reason this was chosen is because its an action and thriller. By filming an action thriller like this helps explain the events without any confusion. This film is all about how the protagonist solves the situation and goes through many different events.

What is the narrative point of view (why was it used)

The narrative structure of taken is restricted its all about how the protagonist goes through each event and as the film continues we discover and understand every new event with them its a film that keeps the audience feeling as part of the film. The reason this was chosen is because if the narrative structure was circular then the audience would know the ending before and it the film finishes and it will just make every event predictable and the ending of the film would not be as epic as it was,and it would not be as enjoyable.

Which narrative events were chosen for the trailer.

The narrative structure chosen for the trailer is also a Linear. This was chosen to outline the narrative events of the film and show how each event took place and what order it happened in. This also makes the audience feel as part of the film and keeps them interested. The taken trailer is all about the protagonist and how he is on a search to find his daughter in paris and how he has to get her back from a group of gangsters who have kidnaped her. The trailer also shows an epic ending but its not the same as the film itself. By doing this it still causes an enigma for the audience.

Genre Analysis

For my genre analysis i have chosen to do the film The Last House On The Left. The genre of this film is an horror, thriller and drama. The film was directed by Dennis Iliadis and was written by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth. The film is a remake of the 1972 version. The trailer has to identify the three genres so its broken up into three different parts. The trailer identifies the genre of drama straight away the trailer shows the family driving down a long country road it has a non-diegetic sound playing through it and it shows an establishing shot of the town telling us that it is an isolated area with no one around. By showing this tells us that the genre is horror as well because many conventional horrors are based in lonely isolated places. The trailer also tells us that they going away for a holiday as the dad says 'are we there yet,its the last house on the left' saying the films name and also giving us an idea that they don't have any houses near by.

The beginning of the trailer the editing is quite slow and the transition used are mostly dissolved they are slow and soft which shows that there is a calm and clear atmosphere. As the trailer continues it starts taking us into the thriller genre where the tension builds up. The trailer starts cutting from one scene to another. The genre is established for a younger audience,it shows the young girl mary and her friend and a young boy spending time together, but then the non-diegetic music starts to pump up as soon as three older people walk into the scene. Match on action showing them getting dragged and kidnapped into the woods. The trailer is linear showing everything in order. So it gets dark and starts raining which brings back the horror genre because in the rain nothing can be heard.

Near the end of the trailer it brings back the drama genre because it shows a caption on ''what would you do'' but then it straight away goes into thriller because the group of people that assaulted the girls end up in the girl's(mary) house after shooting her,but she appears to be alive and makes her way home too. "taken by trees-sweet child o mine" is the soundtrack used when the scenes starts to cut from one to other showing the parents taking revenge. Once the trailer comes to the end it shows the films name and then continues back into the trailer where the man is lying on a table with his head in a microwave, this keeps us wanting more.

After watching the trailer it shows how the three genres are used throughout and how they don't seem to be done at the same time. The trailer is very interesting it uses soundtracks to help with the scenes. The establishing shot helps show the scene(town) and also the films genre which is horror, thriller and a drama.
